Client Profile
Merrell Bros., Inc. is the largest privately owned bio-solids management company in the United States. Merrell Bros. primarily contracts with municipalities for the cleaning and maintenance of wastewater treatment facilities. Merrell Bros. removes and dewaters bio-solids and then safely and efficiently transports and reuses bio solids in environmentally approved land applications for agricultural purposes.

The Challenge
Merrell Bros. has been in business, operating from its Howard County headquarters, since 1982. The company has grown to operate projects in over 30 states. Merrell Bros. has established division centers in 4 states, including Indiana, Illinois, Texas, and Florida. As Merrell Bros. has grown, the need for more equipment and the appropriate place to store that valuable equipment grew too.

Study Results
Merrell Bros. hired McGuire Sponsel to negotiate and procure economic incentives on their behalf in support of the company’s considered expansion. McGuire Sponsel negotiated and worked with the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) and Howard County to procure tax credits and incentives to assist with the expansion of their headquarters facility in Howard County. The company, with the guidance and collaboration of McGuire Sponsel’s Credits and Incentives team, requested and received HBI tax credits from the State of Indiana and tax abatement on real and personal property. These incentives will assist with the expansion of a new warehousing and storage area for an estimated $6M of new equipment. This project also anticipates an additional 25 new jobs at the project site..
